how to eat artichokes whole

nothing like any
  body part
    not shaped like sex or
      love
        at all
you and i are peeling off layers one by one
dipping artichokes into a jar of mayonnaise
biting off just the tips
throwing the skin away between us
into the blue bowl
pulling away the fur with our fingers
last of all eating the dark hearts

after this we sleep together quietly
  our limbs curled like childrens'
    the curtains open the windows
      open
our breathing whistling in our nostrils
