Preparing for the Gig, part 6 - Press!

Seattle's main alternative press promotes the show!

I've had a love/hate relationship with The Stranger. The Stranger has been sometimes supportive of the avant-garde scene here in Seattle and then will completely ignore it for years. Even when they are being supportive it's been tough for me to get more than a show listing in the calendar and maybe an occasionally "pick." I understand that our audiences are small, but without a supportive press there is very little opportunity to grow the local scene. I've gotten more column inches in The Wire then I have in the Stranger over the years. So you can understand how overjoyed I am when I found out that my show was mentioned not once, but twice this week!

First from Dave Segal, one of the papers main music writers who previewed my show in his new electronic music column, Data Breaker. I'm listed under "parties " for some unknown reason.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 11

INTONARUMORI, GRAILS

Intonarumori's Kevin Goldsmith undoubtedly has done hard time on the hair-shirt music circuit (no-alcohol, no-speaking, sitting-only venues that host arcane, difficult ensembles with unpronounceable names). His music's austere yet possesses subtly beautiful contours. Intonarumori's self-titled 2000 album on his own Unit Circle Rekkids evokes Spiritualized-esque guitar spangle on "GTR," eerie Suspiria-soundtrack cello drones and xylophone ripples on "CEL," blasted moondust swirls on "E2E," and stark European art song on Paul Celan Suite. Portland's Grails breaststroke meaningfully in salubrious post-rock waters inhabited by Dirty Three and Rachel's. Their new album on Neurot, Red Light, is as artfully stark and emotionally resonant as a Wim Wenders film. Let's hope Grails bust out their version of Sun City Girls' "Space Prophet Dogon." Living Room, 4301 Fremont Ave, www.livingroomseattle.org, 8 pm-10 pm, all ages.

Now this part of the Grails is new to me, I thought that I was playing with Bios+a+ic, in fact, the e-mail from the promoter I sent out yesterday stated that explicitly. I just hope this isn't some double-booking fuckup. I guess I'll find out tomorrow night. Seattle Weekly lists the Grails playing at another club. Hopefully this was just an editorial mess up over at the Stranger.

The other mention is from my long time avant composer buddy Chris Delaurenti in his column, The Score

SATURDAY DECEMBER 11

INTONARUMORI

Desolate atmospheres and distant, plangent melodies shrouded in electronic fog. Yum. Living Room, 4301 Fremont Ave N, www.livingroomseattle.org, 8 pm, $3.

Now, I've been smarting for a while because a couple of years ago Chris wrote an article which his editors titled "Everything You Need to Know (and Would Ever Want to Know) about Experimental Music in Seattle" which managed to not only ignore me and every project I've ever been involved with, but it completely skipped mention of my label, Unit Circle Rekkids, while mentioning several artists from it. I don't think I would have been so annoyed if he'd kept his list to the local stars, like Amy Denio, Bill Horist, Wayne Horvitz, etc... but he did manage to mention several of the not so famous while completely ignoring several long time and active projects. I'll get over it eventually, buddy, I promise. Thanks for mentioning me in your column.
